What is Aquaponics?

What is it?

Aquaponics brings together the practices of aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (a system of growing plants without soil). In aquaponics, the fish generate water full of nutrients, supplying the plants with a natural source of fertilizer. The nutrients are absorbed by the plants, where the excess water is purified and recycled for the fish to live.

What are the benefits?

This system creates a sustainable environment for both fish and plants, all while saving over 90% of the water used. The water and nutrients are given directly to the plants, giving them more energy to grow. This produces a remarkable 20 times more vegetables per square foot.

At Northsider Farms, we harvest our produce locally using a system free of pesticides and chemicals, allowing our food to have a greater nutritional value. Simply by enjoying our fresh food, customers are making a positive impact on our environment.
